Shutter Speed Vocabulary

Shutter
A device that opens and closes to control the length of exposure for the photo
 
Shutter Speeds
Freeze action:
-          1/1000

-          1/500

-          1/250
Hand held:
-          1/125

-          1/60
Blurred movement:
-          1/30              

-          1/15

-          1/4

-          1/2

Shutter Priority
You set the shutter speed, the camera determines the aperture

Aperture
A device that controls the amount of light admitted through an opening

ISO/ASA
The measure of a digital cameras sensor’s sensitivity to light

Exposure Triangle
The three main elements that must be considered when adjusting exposure; ISO, aperture, and shutter speed

B/Bulb
A shutter speed setting allowing for longer exposure times under the control of the photographer

Cable Release
A short length of flexible cable, used to operate the shutter without shaking the camera

Tripod
An adjustable three-legged stand used to support the camera

Bracketing
A technique of shooting a number of pictures of the same subject at different levels of exposure

Annie Leibovitz



I like this photo for many reasons, one being the fact that Leibovitz was able to capture this motion in her image. It works well in black and white, rather than in colour. This image uses rule of thirds and brings the viewers attention to Mick Jagger's movement.



This photo is interesting because there is virtually no colour except for the red and white, which creates a nice contrast. Leibovitz utilises rule of thirds really well in this photo. This image creates the feel of a circus.
